Ethio telecom and Addis Ababa City Administration Revenues Bureau Implement a telebirr Based Tax Payment System to Enable Tax Payers Settle their Annual Income Tax

In its continued journey to realize the set vision of digital Ethiopia, Ethio telecom and Addis Ababa City Administration Revenues Bureau have implemented a telebirr based tax payment system to enable category C tax payers settle their annual income tax. Accordingly, this partnership agreement signed between the two institutions would enable Addis Ababa City Administration Category C tax payers settle their annual income tax payments anytime from their whereabouts using the newly emerging telebirr digital payment system which is easy, fast, convenient and secure payment platform.

Furthermore, this reliable and cost effective alternative digital payment system on one hand would play a paramount role for Addis Ababa City Administration Revenues Bureau mainly to simplify and timely collect the income tax and on the other hand, it would enable tax payers settle their annual income tax easily and timely via telebirr mobile App or USSD (*127#) from their whereabouts anytime and reduce the problems happening while copying documents apart from assisting them to save their money, time and energy being secured from the toiling and challenges they are facing while frequently traveling to tax collection offices along with waiting for tiresome and long queues.

This tax payment system has been implemented since July 8, 2022 and through this digital payment platform, over 300,000 tax payers are identified to settle their tax payment via telebirr. So far, 679 tax payers have settled their annual income tax of the budget year and about 4 million birr has been collected via telebirr.

Tax payers can easily settle their annual income tax using the payment order number sent to their mobile number via SMS over 7075 from Addis Ababa City Administration and as they settle the payment, they will immediately receive a payment notification SMS from 7075 as well as 127 that can be used as a receipt number/payment confirmation.

In order to easily manage tax payments, unregistered tax payers shall first register for telebirr and deposit adequate amount of money in their telebirr account that will be later used for tax payment. For this to happen, tax payers can visit the nearby Ethio telecom shops as well as authorized telebirr agents to deposit money into their telebirr accounts in advance.

Furthermore, those tax payers who have already had a bank account can transfer money from bank to telebirr with telebirr integrated banks namely Awash Bank, Abyssinia Bank, Berhan Bank, Hibret Bank, Enat Bank, Debub Global Bank, Abay Bank, Dashen Bank, Oromia Bank, Wegagen Bank, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Cooperative Bank of Oromia and Nib Bank.

Whereas, those tax payers who have telebirr account but who haven’t bank account can easily deposit money simply by visiting the nearest bank branches of Cooperative Bank of Oromia, Bank of Abyssinia, Dashen Bank, Enat Bank, Debub Global Bank, Wegagen Bank and Nib Bank as they are not requested to have bank accounts to deposit money into their telebirr accounts.

So far, telebirr digital payment platform has over 21 million subscribers, more than 89 master agents, 73 thousand agents and 21 thousand merchants within a short span of time. In addition, 25-billion-birr electronic money has been transacted through telebirr and the platform has been integrated with 13 banks to transfer money from bank to telebirr and with 11 banks to transfer money from telebirr to bank demonstrating its being best digital payment alternative.

Besides, the agreement was made with Hybrid Designs PLC /Ride/ to collect transport service fares and provide online sales delivery and with Immigration and Citizenship Service to settle passport services payment via telebirr as well as with National Lottery Administration to market digital lottery via telebirr including the integration and digitization of the payment systems of many more organizations with telebirr.
