Down the years, the women have been making low participation in social, economic and political affairs due to the age-old & deep rooted wrong attitudes towards women by a large number of our community members. They have also been victims of the gender based attacks and are highly vulnerable whenever war and conflicts would occur.

International Women’s Day /March 8/ would be celebrated every year to sustainably resolve the mentioned societal perceptions and to realize the women’s equal opportunity and participation in development with men. This year’s International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 for 111^th times at global level under the theme of “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”.

Ethio telecom has made a number of encouraging efforts to ensure women’s multifaceted equal opportunity so as  to enhance and access them to the fruits of telecom services and products. In line with this, the company has been designing and implementing various strategies in order to improve women’s participation within the company. Specially, it has implemented several working systems to create conducive working environment for women and has incorporated this issue in the collective agreement and human resource policy of the company to assure the implementation on sustainable basis accordingly.

In order to improve women’s participation and equal economic opportunity, our company has made remarkable contribution in discharging its corporate social responsibility, especially in empowering women with digital technology so as to handle their own day to day activities easily and to serve their communities at large. As a case in point, the company has made 54.4 million worth 70,000 handsets donation with SIM card for low income women living in 846 woredas/districts of the country during the previous year.

It is recalled that in the near past years, in connection to the International Women’s Day (March 8) Ethio telecom handed over 200 mobile devices and 50 laptops in honor of  best performing women teachers serving in government high schools across the nation.

As part of marking the Women’s international Day, Ethio telecom has launched a one day Women’s Day package and will draw a lottery among women customers who subscribed the Women’s Day package via My Ethiotel, telebirr App or *999# and will award 50 smart phones.

Moreover, ethio telecom has made a one year or six-month long 17 types of mobile devices instalment-based payment for female customers in Addis Ababa and Regional Cities; the devices will be avail in Ethio telecom shops with affordable price and free packages to create the possibility for women to empower them by reducing the digital divide related with cost of ownership.

Furthermore, our company has made women’s sanitary materials donation to 480 Empress Menen Girls’ Boarding Secondary School students that can be used for one year in connection with the March 8 International Women’s Day; and it has also awarded tablets for top 10 outstanding female students who have performed well in the first semester of the academic year.

Until this very moment, the company has been making remarkable contributions in discharging its corporate social responsibility so as to increase women’s participation in social and economic sectors specially in putting women at the center of digital development and will also strive to ensure women’s equal access and use of digital technology in the years to come.
